I’ve done some work with the social media team at the Minnesota Timberwolves in the past, so I was excited when they reached out and asked if I wanted to be part of a project they were working on. The idea was to pair local photographers with players to take unique portraits that helped reveal something about that player and his connection to the city.
When they told me that one option was forward Rob Covington and his pet snakes, I immediately said yes. I’d never worked with snakes before, so it seemed like a great opportunity to do something out of the ordinary.
We shot at RoCo’s apartment in downtown Minneapolis; I had time to get a couple of light set-ups ready before he got home. My first idea was to show Rob with the city behind him; he’s got a great view of Minneapolis City Hall from his window. My other idea was to use some colored gels to create a unique look worthy of the unique subject matter.
The social media team also created a short behind-the-scenes video which is fun to watch because you get to see the snakes in action.
