A few weeks ago I was riding my bike around Lake Calhoun when I saw a man dancing on the beach. Well, he wasn’t really dancing; it looked like some kind of high-powered yoga, with some fast kicks every now and then. I stopped my bike and asked him what he was doing.
It turns out he was practicing Capoeira, which I had never heard of before. Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art, which combines elements of dance, acrobatics and music. It is known for its quick and complex moves, using power, speed, and leverage for a wide variety of kicks and spins.
It was interesting to see how each time he started it would begin with a similar back and forth gliding movement, and then he’d transition into some other kind of sudden, elegant motion. The whole thing was beautiful, and made me want to learn more about this graceful sport.
