Yesterday I spent a few hours at the studio of JD Jorgenson Pottery, near St. Joseph, Minnesota. I went to photograph a class in kiln building offered by the Northern Clay Center. The students, potters themselves, were building a wood-fired Anagama kiln in the shape of a catenary arch. It was interesting to watch them get everything organized and slowly build the walls of kiln. They’ve got another day of building the whole thing, and then they’ll load it up with the pots and start the fire, which is a 72-hour affair that they monitor in shifts, round-the-clock. I’m looking forward to seeing the finished pots.
